Red Sox make two more roster cuts ahead of Opening Day
The Red Sox made two more roster cuts late Thursday night following the club’s 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, optioning infielder David Hamilton and infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez to Triple-A.
Hamilton and Gonzalez were among the last contenders for a spot on the Red Sox bench. Hamilton, one of the fastest players in the organization, is a burner on the base paths who has recorded 137 stolen bases in the minors over the last two seasons but who struggled in his brief MLB opportunities last year.
Gonzalez, meanwhile, is a 27-year-old utility player with three years of big league experience, all coming with the Chicago White Sox. Gonzalez appeared in 44 MLB games last season and batted .194 with a .585 OPS, but can also play every position on the diamond besides first base and catcher.
He was viewed as among the primary challengers for the Red Sox utility job, which now looks like Pablo Reyes’ to lose.
With Thursday’s cuts the Red Sox now have 40 players remaining in big league camp, including seven non-roster invitees. Those include left-handers Joely Rodriguez and Lucas Luetge, catchers Roberto Perez and Mark Kolozsvary, first baseman C.J. Cron, outfielder Mark Contreras and infielder/outfielder Eddy Alvarez.
