Red Sox LHP Chris Murphy to receive MRI on pitching elbow
Left-hander Chris Murphy has been shut down and will receive an MRI on his pitching elbow, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Monday.
Murphy last pitched on Thursday against Philadelphia, but according to Cora he hasn’t recovered well and is feeling discomfort in his elbow.
“Obviously worry, of course, but we’ll have more most likely tomorrow,” Cora said.
The 25-year-old made his MLB debut for Boston last season and briefly emerged as a formidable left-handed weapon out of the bullpen. The converted starter posted a 1.59 ERA over his first nine appearances in June and July before running out of steam down the stretch and finishing the season with a 4.91 ERA over 47.2 innings.
Entering this season Murphy was regarded as a contender for one of the last spots in the Red Sox bullpen, especially as a left-hander with the ability to pitch multiple innings. Now Murphy’s status is in doubt with less than two weeks remaining before Opening Day.
Cora did provide one positive injury update related to the bullpen, saying right-hander Zack Kelly (sore oblique) is making progress and could return to the mound in Friday’s game against Toronto. Whether he can avoid starting the year on the injured list, or if he makes the Opening Day, will depend in large part on how things go on Friday.
