The Patriots 2016 third-round pick played under new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt in 2022 with the Browns. Since being traded from the Patriots to the Colts in 2017, he’s also spent time with the Dolphins and Commanders.
The hope is that Brissett will serve as a veteran bridge/backup in New England, per a source. The Patriots hold the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, where they could select who’s left between USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.
Brissett, 31, is 18-30 as a starter over his eight-year career. He played sparingly with the Commanders last season, completing 18-of-23 passes for 224 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
The veteran QB went 1-1 for the Patriots as a rookie starter, filling in for a suspended Tom Brady and injured Jimmy Garoppolo, in 2016.
He’s completed 61.3% of his passes for 10,574 yards with 51 touchdowns and 23 touchdowns in 79 career games. Brissett has also rushed for 915 yards on 230 carries with 15 touchdowns since entering the NFL.
Current Patriots assistants T.C. McCartney, their quarterbacks coach, and Scott Peters, the team’s offensive line coach, were also on the 2022 Browns staff.
