Report: Danielle Hunter leaves Vikings for 2-year, $49 million deal with Texans
After establishing himself among the best edge rushers of his generation, it appears Danielle Hunter is on the verge of leaving the Vikings for good.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Hunter has agreed to a 2-year, $49 million deal with the Houston Texans, which includes $48 million guaranteed. There are additional incentives in the deal that could bring the max value to $51 million if Hunter hits certain benchmarks.
It seemed inevitable that the Vikings would be moving on from Hunter when they agreed to a deal with edge rusher Jonathan Greenard roughly 45 minutes into the legal tampering period on Monday. That feeling got even stronger when the Vikings agreed to a deal with edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel a couple of hours later.
As for Hunter, his decision to sign with the Texans provides a great fit on the field, as he will get to pair with young edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. It also provides a great fit off the field for Hunter, as he grew up in Katy, Texas, which is located on the outskirts of Houston.
It was a heck of a ride for Hunter in the Twin Cities. He was selected by the Vikings in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, and while he was a raw talent playing for LSU in college, Hunter quickly grasped the intricacies of getting after the opposing quarterback at the next level.
To this point in his career, Hunter has 87 1/2 sacks, 108 tackles for a loss, and 134 quarterback hits. He doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon as he posted a career-high 16 1/2 sacks for the Vikings last season. That type of dominance proved Hunter is sill in his prime and now he will be paid like it.
