Duxbury returning to TD Garden after rallying past Algonquin

FRAMINGHAM – The energy and physicality No. 5 Algonquin brought Saturday night to its Div. 2 girls hockey state semifinal at Loring Arena put Duxbury on the ropes early, but the defending-champion Dragons are headed back to TD Garden for a second straight year.

Addy Harrington’s two goals and Megan Carney’s game-winner early in the third period marked three unanswered tallies for No. 1 Duxbury, overcoming 16 combined penalties and a deficit in the opening five minutes as part of a 3-1 comeback win.

Each of Harrington’s goals came by the left post to get past an impressive outing from Titans goalie Addy Cagan (21 saves), while the Dragons’ penalty kill went 5-for-6 to hold off a comeback in a matchup between each of the last two Div. 2 state champions.

Duxbury will face the winner of Sunday’s No. 2 Falmouth-No. 11 Marshfield semifinal on March 17 at TD Garden.

“It’s satisfying on a program-wide base that we can compete every single year,” said Dragons head coach Dan Najarian. “That’s a great hockey team. They’re fast, they’re physical, they play hard, they compete. It’s just a testament to the hard work. … We know what we’re doing every single day, it’s to get here and play in games like this in front of crowds like this that you don’t get anywhere else.”

“Super excited (to go back to TD Garden),” Harrington added. “We have to take this one, we have to practice well and just get it done again and win.”

Teams combined for six penalties in the first period, and Algonquin’s first power play set up Ariya Tice’s rebound score for a 1-0 lead just 4:09 in.

Duxbury responded, though. Carney was active on the penalty kill and goalie Anna McGinty (13 saves) was strong in net to make sure that’s all the Titans would get despite a uniquely physical challenge. Gap control and winning the neutral zone were critical keys to limit Algonquin.

It wasn’t too long into the second that Harrington scooped in a rebound off Maddie Greenwood’s shot from the point on the power play, and Carney’s goal one minute into the third gave Duxbury the 2-1 lead.

“Once they got that first goal, we knew we had to come back from that and we obviously did,” Harrington said.

Harrington went on to score again off Zoey Madigan’s feed from below the goal line with 6:59 left for all the insurance Duxbury would need. Perhaps even more impressive, though, was Carney’s back-check immediately after her goal to spoil a breakaway Algonquin could’ve tied the game on.

“Going through my head I’m like, ‘This is win or go home,’ ” Carney said.
