Dover-Sherborn/Weston ousts top-seed Winthrop in Div. 4 boys hockey semifinal
BOURNE – It took a shootout to decide a winner, but fifth-seeded Dover-Sherborn/Weston had just enough to take out the high-flying and top-seeded Winthrop offense Saturday afternoon.
Senior captain Calvin Roman scored the second shootout tally in the third round and Andrew Goldstein made three saves in the five-round shootout to lift the Raiders over the Vikings 2-1 in the Div. 4 semifinals at Bourne Arena.
“We practice every scenario – both overtimes and shootouts and we had a couple scrimmages to get ready for that, too,” said Dover-Sherborn/Weston coach Alex Barlow. “We had never won (in the shootouts) and we scored two goals, but that is all it took today. So, I’ll take it.”
In the two overtimes, both goaltenders came up big with a combined for 33 saves and Goldstein came up with several big saves to end the first overtime as well as regulation.
“I just treat every single save like I need to make it,” Goldstein said about his ability to keep composure in the overtime periods.
Goldstein finished with 44 saves as well as three in the shootout to hold Winthrop (18-4-2) to the one tally.
With Dover-Sherborn/Weston (20-4) controlling the first five minutes of play, Winthrop flipped the script over the final 10 minutes of the first period. The Vikings outshout the Raiders 8-1 and tallied a power-play goal by senior Pete Silverman at the 11:46 mark of the frame to go up 1-0.
In the second period, the Raiders came out peppering the net once again with a 7-1 shot advantage a little over five minutes into it. Winthrop then went on another man-advantage at the 5:46 mark. A little over a minute later, junior Brayden McKenna intercepted a pass and took it in for the short-handed goal to knot it up 1-1 with 8:27 left in the second.
“I don’t like playing down a man, but I say they thrive on it,” Barlow said about the shorthanded score. “It did open the ice up for us and we do have team speed.”
McKenna also scored to open up the shootout.
Winthrop piled on shots the rest of the frame as both teams finished with 10 shots in the second. The Vikings had several opportunities to take the lead back over the final minutes, including a sliding stop for Goldstein with a little under a minute remaining.
The Raiders will now play the winner of Sunday’s Hanover/Stoneham matchup in the Div. 4 finals at TD Garden next Sunday.
