Rudy Gobert’s late-game tech proves costly as Timberwolves fall in overtime to Cleveland
Minnesota’s chance at starting its six-game road trip off with a pair of victories slipped through its fingers Friday in a 113-104 overtime defeat to the short-handed Cavaliers in Cleveland.
Naz Reid was spectacular for Minnesota. The big man — who will consistently be asked to fill a larger scoring load for the Wolves in the absence of Karl-Anthony Towns — proved to be more than capable of fulfilling those responsibilities Friday. Reid finished with 34 points on 10-for-18 shooting.
Included in that scoring performance was one of the bigger baskets of the game for Minnesota, as Reid cashed a corner 3-pointer he hit on the run to bring the Wolves within one with 58 seconds to play.
On the other end, Cleveland got consistent production from its big in Jarrett Allen. He provided one bucket in the paint after another, finishing with 33 points and 18 rebounds.
Wolves center Rudy Gobert took an ill-advised technical foul late in the game with Minnesota ahead by a point. After he was called for a foul — his sixth of the game that ejected him from the contest — Gobert flashed a “money” sign, suggesting the officials were paid off. That drew a technical foul that gave the Cavaliers a free throw to tie the contest with 28 seconds to play.
Both teams had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation. Neither could, as Anthony Edwards’ attempt at the horn failed to even touch iron. One night after his heroic performance in a win in Indiana, Edwards finished with 19 points on 7-for-27 shooting.
While Minnesota was without Towns and on the second half of a back-to-back, Cleveland was without Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Max Strus — 60 percent of its starting lineup.
