It’s believed the Patriots and Jones would mutually benefit from a fresh start after two consecutive disappointing seasons.
League sources say Jones should fetch a fifth-round pick in a potential trade. Another front-office executive said the Patriots would be lucky to get a sixth-rounder in return.
Jones, a 2021 first-round pick sat for the final six games of last season and was benched four times before December. Jones struggled mightily with turnovers and pressure, issues exacerbated by poor protection and receiver play. He completed 64.9% of his passes for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, before ceding the reins to backup Bailey Zappe.
Jones initially broke out as a Pro Bowl alternate, producing one of the best statistical seasons for a rookie quarterback in league history. Potential trade partners are expected to try and restore that version of Jones, who threw for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions during a playoff campaign. Since then, Jones has dealt with significant coaching turnover and poor surrounding roster construction in New England.
The 25-year-old also drew criticism from inside and outside the Patriots’ building for his on-field outbursts and inconsistent leadership. By midseason last year, team sources told the Herald Jones had lost the locker room.
Jones is expected to head into a contract year, unless the Patriots — or his next team — picks up a fifth-year option built into his contract by May 2. If Jones’ option is picked up, his 2025 salary would be $25.56 million guaranteed.
