New Car Preview: 2026 Rivian R2
Rivian unveils its latest addition to the lineup, the 2026 Rivian R2. Positioned as a more accessible option compared to its predecessors, the R2 presents a compelling entry point into the Rivian brand, slated to hit the market in 2026 with a starting price of $45,000.
Offering versatility, the R2 comes with the option of one, two, or three electric motors. The single-motor configuration powers the rear wheels, while the other two variants offer all-wheel-drive capability. Regardless of motor setup, all models boast an impressive range of over 300 miles on a single charge, with the fastest version capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds.
In terms of size, the R2 is notably smaller than its R1S sibling, accommodating five passengers within its 115.6-inch wheelbase. Measuring 185.6 inches in length, 84.4 inches in width (including mirrors), and 66.9 inches in height, the R2 maintains a compact profile, distinguishing itself as a more urban-friendly option while sacrificing some off-road capability compared to the R1S.
Despite its smaller stature, the R2 retains key features indicative of Rivian’s pedigree. With 9.8 inches of ground clearance and respectable approach and departure angles, it maintains off-road prowess suitable for various terrains, although not as formidable as the R1S.
Design-wise, the R2 stays true to Rivian’s established aesthetic, sporting a clean, boxy silhouette with signature lighting elements both at the front and rear. Inside, the SUV boasts a modern interior with a dual-screen display and flexible seating arrangements, including the ability to fold all seats flat for increased cargo space. Additionally, practical features such as dual glove compartments and versatile window configurations enhance the driving experience.
The R2 is designed to accommodate the North American Charging Standard, ensuring compatibility with Tesla chargers, and qualifies for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. While deliveries are set to commence in the first half of 2026, Rivian’s plans hinge on the construction of the factory responsible for producing the R2, with reservations currently open for eager customers.
