Suspected murderer of Brockton nurse arrested in Kenya
The man accused of murdering a Brockton behavior health nurse in November has been arrested by Kenyan authorities.
The body of Margaret Mbitu, 31, was located inside a vehicle at Logan International Airport’s central parking garage at about 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, the Herald reported at that time. State Police immediately identified Kevin Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, as the suspect in her death and that he had boarded a flight to Kenya.
Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said in a Tuesday statement announcing Kangethe’s arrest that he was “extremely grateful to the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the FBI, Kenyan law enforcement agencies, the Kenyan government and the Massachusetts State Police for bringing the person accused of Margaret Mbitu’s brutal murder into custody.
“Their tremendous and untiring efforts will provide Margaret’s family and friends the opportunity to see Kevin Kangethe face justice for this terrible crime,” he continued.
Kangethe’s case no faces an “uncertain timeline of the extradition process” to get him from Kenya back to Massachusetts, according to a Suffolk DA spokesman.
Mbitu had worked as a per diem nurse at BAMSI, a Brockton-based organization that states on its website it works with people with developmental disabilities and mental and behavioral health challenges, according to the organization.
The company said that she had not been seen since Oct. 30, two days before her body was found at Logan Airport.
Her death had the organization “mourning” and “heartbroken” over the loss of the “amazing individual” they knew as Maggie, Ulea Lago, BAMSI’s executive vice president for strategy, told the Herald at the time of her death.
