Basketball notebook: Defense fuels 10-1 start for Billerica girls

Billerica is no longer catching people by surprise.

With an experienced starting lineup that has a balanced attack, the Indians are 10-1 and hold notable Merrimack Valley Conference wins over Andover and Central Catholic. Billerica holds the No. 7 spot in Div. 2 in the MIAA girls basketball power rankings.

“We’ve played without any egos, ” Billerica coach Chris Doneski said. “Our team has experienced both successes and failures over the years so they do not get too up or too down regardless of a game’s outcome. They are all committing to doing what is right for the team.”

The Indians, who won their first 10 games of the season before falling to Central Catholic in a rematch on Thursday night, have allowed more than 50 points in just two games. Four starters — Audrey Toce, Haleigh Cyrus, Alyssa Fiorino, and Sara MacLeod — are three-year veterans.

Leading the defensive charge is senior guard Toce, who has taken on the challenge of guarding the opposing team’s best player. MacLeod, a junior forward, has gone from averaging just three points a season ago to now tallying double figures. Cyrus runs the offense as the team’s point guard. Sophomore forward Kendra Marino has been instrumental to the team’s interior defense and puts up eight points and six rebounds a night.

“We’ve been resilient and have allowed things to unfold. We do not get caught up in one bad play here or there,” Doneski said. “They are not half-in or half-out effort-wise. All of our girls are all in, and there’s nothing that beats that.”

Billerica enters the second half of the season tied for the MVC Large lead with Andover. The sides have a showdown on Feb. 9 in Billerica. The Indians won the first meeting, 44-42.

League powers

There are a handful of programs who appear set to compete for league championships in the boys and girls divisions.

Whitman-Hanson holds a commanding lead on the Patriot League Keenan boys side, while its girls are also edging out Duxbury by a game. Needham is in the mix in both divisions, with its girls in a fierce race with Walpole. Lynn Tech holds the edge on both sides in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.

Andover enters the second half of the season with a chance to take home both boys and girls crowns in the Merrimack Valley Conference large. Bourne is the team to beat across the board in the South Coast Conference.
