WEEI Red Sox announcer Will Flemming strikes out on White Sox TV job

Red Sox radio announcer Will Flemming has struck out on a TV role for the upcoming baseball season.

Flemming, who has been a play-by-play announcer on WEEI since 2019, was reportedly a finalist for the Chicago White Sox TV job.

But that Windy City broadcast role has been filled by ESPN’s John Schriffen, the White Sox announced on Thursday.

“Live from the broadcast booth…,” the team posted, along with a photo of Schriffen and the title, “TV play-by-play announcer.”

Schriffen and the White Sox struck a multi-year deal, according to MLB.com.

Flemming was reportedly the most experienced finalist for the role.

“Hope this means @WillFlemming returns back to the Sox booth!” a Sox fan posted on social media after the White Sox TV news on Thursday.

The Red Sox radio announcer was seeking the Chicago TV job after Audacy Boston’s WEEI recently put up a job posting for a “Red Sox Play by Play/Analyst Announcer” for the 2024 Sox season. Audacy has said that the station is “simply building a bench.”

Also, Audacy recently filed for bankruptcy amid a drop of several billion dollars in radio ad spending. Audacy filed for prepackaged Chapter 11 proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Flemming is still an Audacy employee, and he was allowed to interview for the TV role while he continues to work for Audacy. Flemming is also a play-by-play broadcaster for ESPN.

After the White Sox announced the team’s new TV broadcaster on Thursday, Schriffen in a social media video praised Chicago fans, noting their deep passion.

“Chicago fans take the cake,” Schriffen said. “When it comes to sports, you guys are the best. The most passionate. The most knowledgeable. Nobody around the country has Chicago sports fans beat.

“I bring energy, passion,” he added. “When the big moment happens, I am going to rise to the occasion, and you are going to feel the energy from the booth wherever you’re watching the game. Because that’s what I love.”
