Once again, Duluth question stumps everyone on ‘Jeopardy!’

DULUTH — The producers of the quiz show “Jeopardy!” seem to have learned how to flummox their contestants: Just ask a question about Duluth.

In 2022, no contestant could correctly respond to the Final Jeopardy clue, “At about 90,000, it’s the most populous city on North America’s biggest lake.” There were two incorrect guesses of Green Bay and one of Minneapolis.

In the Champions Wildcard match that aired Monday, Jan. 22, Duluth was part of the clue under the “Jukebox Musicals” category in the Double Jeopardy round.

“‘Girl From the North Country,’” went the clue, “this boy from Duluth.”

None of the three contestants were able to correctly guess Bob Dylan, whose music provided the basis for the Broadway musical now touring nationally. One contestant, Ron Cheung, incorrectly guessed Prince — who is not from Duluth, and does not have a jukebox musical (yet).

No video of the stumper immediately emerged on social media, but the question was documented on the fan-created J! Archive site and confirmed to the News Tribune by a Duluth viewer who watched the episode.

On a fan discussion board and on social media, some fans pointed out that Dylan is more commonly associated with Hibbing than with Duluth. That may have contributed to the contestants’ confusion, but Dylan was, in fact, born in Duluth on May 24, 1941.
