Charlestown goes the extra mile to defeat Burke in a BCL boys hoop showdown
CHARLESTOWN — Four quarters of chaos wasn’t enough to settle the score of a high-intensity matchup between Charlestown and Burke on a stormy Wednesday night.
In the end, the Townies finally pulled away in double overtime for a thrilling 94-84 win against the visiting Bulldogs in an instant classic of Boston City League boys basketball heavyweights.
“That was a crazy game,” said Charlestown coach Hugh Coleman. “It was good for the city. It was good for basketball.
‘You’ve got two teams that are considered two of the top teams in the city just going back and forth … it was a classic city slugfest.”
Led by junior forward Jaylin Williams Crawford, who scored 14 of his 37 points in the overtime periods, Charlestown (8-1) almost snuck out of the first extra session with a three-point win.
A resilient Bulldogs (7-3) team had other ideas. Denilson Fanfan missed his first chance to tie the game with a corner three as time was winding down, but nailed his second try at the buzzer after an offensive rebound got the ball back to him in the same spot.
Tied at 78-78 heading into the second OT, the Townies finally pulled away. Williams Crawford continued to score at will in the paint, and Jordany Mak hit a dagger of a three (one of his four outside bombs on the night) to give Charlestown some breathing room.
It was a gritty effort from the Townies, who trailed for most of the second half. They had an early lead, but a 20-4 Burke run going into halftime left them fighting an uphill battle.
Stifled by the Bulldogs’ 2-2-1 full-court trap, Charlestown had trouble bringing the ball up until Jaylen Hunter-Coleman caught fire in the third quarter and turned into a one-man press break.
The sophomore slashed his way to 33 points, 23 of them after halftime, to keep the Townies in it until a fourth-quarter rally.
“Even when we made a play and I thought we had the momentum, they took it right back,” Coleman said.
On the other side of the court, sophomore guard Malik Adamson (24 points) nearly willed his team to victory, and junior Jaeden Roberts added 21 points.
It was a tough loss for the two-time defending city champions in a tough, clean slugfest that could have gone either way.
“I loved the fact that our boys battled,” Coleman said. “But at the end, there was nothing but respect.”
