Northeastern tops Boston University 2-1 in overtime in Beanpot title game

The Northeastern women’s hockey team enjoyed an historic first with a second straight championship performance.

The Huskies captured back-to-back Beanpot titles and their record 19th overall on Tuesday night with a 2-1 overtime victory over Boston University in the 45th championship game and first played in the TD Garden.

The No. 14 ranked Huskies improved to 16-9-1 while the Terriers dropped to 11-11-3. Even though both teams play in Hockey East, all Beanpot matches go into the books as non-league games.

NU secured the win when left wing Katy Knoll set up first line center Skyler Irving for her second of the game and seventh of the season 37 seconds into the overtime. Irving was awarded the Beanpot MVP trophy for her efforts. The Huskies were presented the Beanpot Trophy by Gov. Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. The official attendance figure was 10,633.

The opposing goaltenders were the difference makers. NU’s Gwyneth Philips made 23 saves to record her 16th victory. BU’s Callie Shanahan recorded 28 saves in the loss.

Philips was on the BU bench for an extra skater when left wing Sydney Healey set up Catherine Foulem for the equalizer that made it 1-1 with 57 seconds to play in regulation

The Terriers were desperate for a reversal of fortune after falling to the Huskies in three previous Hockey East matches this season. NU opened the campaign with a home and home sweep on Oct. 5 and 6 and prevailed 2-1 in overtime at the Dog Pound on Dec. 1.

NU advanced to the Beanpot title game with a 1-0 win over Harvard while BU beat BC (3-3, 1-0 OT) in a shootout. Both Beanpot semifinal games were played at Harvard’s Bright Arena.

The first period provided plenty of highlights but not red lights. Both squads killed of late power plays and NU exited the ice with an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.

The Huskies opened the second period with a flurry missed taking a 1-0 lead when sophomore left wing Mia Langolis hit the post on a backhand bid at 1:39. BU regrouped and took the game to the NU end and recorded six unanswered shots on goal. Despite the energy, intensity and all-around good play exhibited by both camps, the second period remained scoreless right up to 33.5 seconds remaining.

NU broke the deadlock at 19:27 when freshman defenseman Rylie Jones of Chelmsford made a bounce pass off the half wall to Irving in the left circle. The junior from Kingston cut through the low slot and fired a rising wrist shot that beat Shanahan glove side for her sixth of the season.

In the consolation game, Harvard defeated Boston College in a shootout after the teams were tied 2-2 through regulation and overtime.
