Ticker: Bay State gas prices drop again; Southwest pilots ratify 50% raises
Gas prices continued their decline in Massachusetts, dropping another two cents to land at $3.11 in the latest survey by AAA Northeast.
The Bay State has come out on the winning side of the price watch, as cold weather grips much of the country and some other states saw prices climb.
“Output at more than a dozen domestic refineries was affected by the bitter cold last week, but demand was down as well,” said Mark Schieldrop, Senior Spokesperson for AAA Northeast. “All things considered, we might be seeing some of the lowest prices of the year. Historically, pump prices reach their lowest in January and February before domestic refiners pause production for maintenance and the switchover to summer blend fuel as Spring approaches.”
The price of gas in Massachusetts is 14 cents lower than a month ago and 25 cents less than it was at the same time last year.
Southwest pilots ratify 50% raises
Pilots at Southwest Airlines have overwhelmingly approved a new contract that will raise their pay rates by nearly 50% by 2028, becoming the last group of pilots at the nation’s four biggest airlines to score huge raises.
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association said Monday that the agreement covering pay and other issues for about 11,000 pilots was ratified by a 93% to 7% margin.
The Southwest agreement followed more than three years of bargaining.
“This has been a long time coming and it is only through the unity of our pilot group that we were able to achieve the gains in this contract,” said pilots’ union President Casey Murray. He said the agreement gives pilots “the security and protections that have been long needed.”
