Catholic Memorial holds off rival BC High, remains unbeaten in Catholic Conference

Jacob Cofield turned an unthinkable tragedy into an evening worth celebrating.

Just two days after his mother passed away, Cofield scored 12 points and added 7 rebounds and six blocks to help lead No. 1 Catholic Memorial past Catholic Conference rival No. 6 BC High, 75-66, at Ronald Perry Memorial Gymnasium in West Roxbury.

The Knights (9-1, 4-0) now find themselves with a two game lead in the race for the league crown.

“Jacob (Cofield) played with a heavy heart tonight,” Catholic Memorial coach Denis Tobin said. “I am so proud of him for how he performed and I am incredibly happy for him.”

Freshman sensation Josiah Adamson scored 29 points for the Knights who overcame an early fourth quarter deficit.

“BC High came back and took the lead on us early in the fourth quarter and that was not something we’ve really had to experience this year,” Tobin said. “I never really know how my young guys are going to respond to that and they did very well tonight.”

On the heels of four triples from senior Ryan Higgins, the Knights held a 40-31 lead at the break. BC High, however, answered in the third as the Eagles went on an 11-3 run to pull within 43-42. A Dan Civello putback once again trimmed the Eagles deficit to one, 53-52, after three and then Julian Sustache hit a runner to put BC High in front.

The Knights answered as Adamson buried a three-pointer from the left-wing to catapult the hosts back in front, 63-59, with four minutes remaining. Adamson and Cofield then put the game to rest as the two each put home a pair of baskets to put Catholic Memorial up five, 71-66, with just over a minute to play.

Courtesy of a balanced scoring attack that saw all five starters enter the scoresheet, the Eagles jumped out to an 18-11 lead. The Knights, however, pushed in front as Adamson scored eight of his points while DJ Overall added a triple of his own as part of an 11-0 spurt that put the hosts up 28-18 after one..
