Massachusetts snow forecast: Another round of light snow before ‘downright frigid’ arctic temps

Get ready to bundle up — and consider wearing two pairs of socks — with the coldest air of the season descending on the region.

After another round of light snow falls on Friday, with the highest totals expected along Cape Cod and the South Shore, bitter “downright frigid” arctic temps will take over.

The polar wind chills could make it feel like 10 below zero in parts of Massachusetts this weekend.

“It’s going to be quite cold,” Alan Dunham, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald on Wednesday.

“It may be a shock to many as it has been a rather mild winter, but mid to late January is climatologically the coldest period of the year, so it’s about time for a cold snap around here!” reads the National Weather Service forecast discussion.

Wind chill values Friday night and Saturday night will drop to below zero degrees in many spots of the Bay State.

Before the cold air rushes in, some snow will fall across the region on Friday. The snow forecast for the Boston-area is 1 to 3 inches, while southeastern Massachusetts and the South Shore could see 2 to 4 inches, and Cape Cod may get 3 to 5 inches.

“Light snow should be moving in Friday morning and continuing through the day,” Dunham said.

Then after the departing low pressure system Friday night, low temps will fall into the upper single digits across the far interior and mid 10s along the coastal plain.

“Daytime highs Saturday will be downright frigid with the cold pool peaking, with areas northwest of the I-95 corridor failing to reach 20F!” reads the National Weather Service forecast discussion.

Sunday’s high temps will still be frigid in the mid 20s before a jump into the 30s on Monday. High temps could even approach 40 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Next shot for precip comes Tuesday night/Wednesday ahead of a warm front,” the NWS forecast discussion reads. “It doesn’t look substantial at this time, but could yield a litany of mixed p-types for a short time.”
