Late goal lifts Boston to thrilling PWHL win over Toronto

Loren Gabel scored a pair of goals including the game-winner with 1:50 remaining in regulation, as Boston topped Toronto, 3-2, in their first-ever Professional Women’s Hockey League meeting, Wednesday at Mattamy Athletic Centre.

It was Boston’s second straight victory north of the border, following its 3-2 overtime victory at Montreal on Saturday.

Locked in a 2-2 stalemate, Boston was looking for a break and got it courtesy of Gabel. The Kitchener, Ontario native caught a behind-the-back pass from Alina Müller (three assists) before rifling a snapshot over the glove of Toronto goalie Kristen Campbell (24 saves) at 18:10. It was Gabel’s third point of the game.

Toronto took the lead midway through the first period. Forward Hannah Miller batted in her first of two goals, off a rebound at 9:00 of the first period. Boston battled back, potting a pair in the second stanza, with Gabel and Müller keying the comeback. A Northeastern product, Müller sent Gabel in with a nifty one-armed carom pass along the side boards. Gabel took the feed full flight, gliding down the right lane before beating Campbell top shelf at 12:38.

The pair continued their crisp passing striking six minutes later, as Müller dished a centering pass to Megan Keller. The Boston defenseman solved Campbell with a blueline blast, giving Boston the 2-1 lead at 18:38. Miller tried to rally the Toronto troops, scoring her second goal of the night off a turnover. But Gabel put the game away with her second goal in the closing minutes, earning the game’s first star.

A Swedish Senior National Team member and 2023 graduate from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Boston goalie Emma Söderberg made 30 saves, earning the third star in her North American professional debut.
