Celtics hit season’s midway point with league’s best record after easy win over Spurs

If there’s one constant about the Celtics through the first half of the season, it’s their high level of consistency.

At full strength, they boast the most talented roster in the league. But when they’re down critical pieces, they haven’t given in to excuses. With the exception of last week’s blowout loss to the Bucks – which was played under unique and brutal travel circumstances – the Celtics have very rarely been outplayed. They’ve taken the best punch from almost every opponent and overcome it on the vast majority of nights.

At the midway point, the Celtics are exactly what we thought they would be.

Wednesday night marked yet another example of the steadiness they’ve demonstrated through the first three months of the season. They were missing Kristaps Porzingis and Derrick White. It didn’t matter. The Celtics took care of business the way they should against an inferior opponent. They weren’t fazed by No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama, and they crushed the lowly Spurs in a dominant 117-98 victory at TD Garden.

The Celtics own a league-best 32-9 record at the halfway point of season with Wednesday’s victory, which pushed them to 20-0 at home ahead of Friday’s night’s visit from the reigning NBA champion Nuggets.

Wembanyama was impressive with 27 points, which included some dunks that made TD Garden buzz, but he and the Spurs, who are in last place in the was no match for the Celtics. Jayson Tatum scored 24 points, Jrue Holiday had 22 points and Jaylen Brown had 21 points as the C’s overwhelmed the Spurs with hot 3-point shooting. They started the game 14-for-20 from deep and led by as many as 30 early in the second half before coasting to the finish.
