Report: Red Sox make internal switch to fill void at third base coach
During the Winter Meetings in Nashville, the Red Sox indicated they planned to make an internal hire to fill their vacant third base coach position. Now it appears the switch has been finalized and the 2024 coaching staff is set for the season.
According to Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe, the Red Sox will shift former first base coach Kyle Hudson across the diamond to third base coach, and field coordinator Andy Fox will move into Hudson’s old spot as first base coach.
The move follows the club’s previous hire of Andrew Bailey as pitching coach and Justin Willard as director of pitching, and no other coaching hires are expected ahead of spring training.
Hudson originally joined the Red Sox staff last winter and also served as outfield coordinator in addition to his first base coaching duties. Prior to that he spent four seasons coaching in the Cleveland Guardians organization, including three years on the MLB staff, and he also played eight seasons of pro ball as a player, including 14 games in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles in 2011.
Hudson takes over for Carlos Febles, who was fired along with former pitching coach Dave Bush following the season and who has since been hired by the Toronto Blue Jays. Febles also served as infield coordinator and was let go largely in response to the club’s persistent defensive woes, and during the Winter Meetings chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said they hoped having one fewer coach on staff would lead to more “accountability” behind the scenes and better results on the field.
“I think where Alex (Cora) and I have had a bunch of productive conversations is how do we increase the accountability of our staff,” Breslow said last month. “I think we can speak in greater detail about specifically the work guys need to take on in order to address some of their deficiencies as opposed to just using generalities about ‘getting better’ or ‘becoming better defenders.’”
Though it hasn’t been confirmed who will serve as infield coordinator, a logical arrangement would be for Hudson to retain his previous outfield role and for Fox to step in to lead the infielders.
