Tom Mulherin’s high school hockey crystal ball

Be careful what you wish for, or what goes up must come down; pick your favorite cliché for the crystal ball after we had a little bit of both last week.

A small slump with reading the boys’ end of Hockeyland drew a call for change. We got it with a 6-1 showing. Arlington’s 2-1 win over Hingham was the only blemish, but even then, such a tight affair between two of the best public teams isn’t something to grimace over. All is good there.

But while all we want is good hockey, the results didn’t show up so well on the girls’ side to break up an undefeated two weeks. We flew too close to the sun, and Hingham, Milton, Andover, Lincoln-Sudbury and Nauset all delivered signature close wins to put momentum in the crystal ball to a screeching halt.

These predictions seem to be alternating successful weeks between the girls and the boys. Here’s to putting it all together across the board this week, with another reminder that we don’t repeat teams in these previews:

LAST WEEK’S RECORD: 8-6
OVERALL: 40-26-4

** WINNERS in CAPS

Monday
Pope Francis vs READING, 1 p.m. – Rockets bounced back from a tough two losses with wins over Belmont and Arlington, look to build on that rhythm with a win over the defending champs in an endowment game.

Wednesday
Canton vs ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS, 5 p.m. – Bishops attack maintains momentum, execute enough to take down a top Div. 2 team.

WESTFORD ACADEMY vs Billerica, 5:50 p.m. – Meaningful game in the MVC/DCL race to stay near the top of the standings for Westford.

St. John’s (S) vs ST. JOHN’S PREP, 6 p.m. – The Pioneers are fit to compete with SJP, but it’s hard to pick against the Eagles right now.

Saturday
Woburn vs ARLINGTON, noon – Two of the top teams in the Middlesex League Liberty race, Spy Ponders recover from their loss to Reading.

King Philip vs FRANKLIN, 4:30 p.m. – Warriors have flashed big-game success this year and took down Canton over the weekend, but the Panthers outlast them with another big offensive showing.

Hingham vs NOTRE DAME (H), 3 p.m. – Defense has been dominant for NDA most of the year. It needs as big of an outing as any to limit the Harborwomen.

Wednesday
FALMOUTH vs Martha’s Vineyard, 5 p.m. – The last two unbeatens in Cape and Island League play put on a show, but the Clippers attack wins what could turn into a high-scoring affair.

Winthrop vs WINCHESTER, 6:10 p.m. – Red and Black have shown big-win capability already, and Winthrop is as tough as any coming off a game against Malden Catholic on Monday.

LINCOLN-SUDBURY vs Andover, 8 p.m. – Scoring three goals against Methuen/Tewksbury on Saturday shows the Warriors can light the lamp against anyone, which will again be tested against a stingy Andover blue line.

Friday
Longmeadow vs POPE FRANCIS, 5 p.m. – Battle among the best of Western Mass. Pope Francis shows why it’s a serious Div. 1 contender.

Saturday
MALDEN CATHOLIC vs Archbishop Williams, 4:20 p.m. – Tested earlier in the week by Winchester and Burlington, Lancers cap off the stretch with another elite defensive showing.

Billerica/Chelmsford vs SHREWSBURY, 5 p.m. – Colonials are in a bit of a rough patch with finding the back of the net, but do it enough to double up their win over B/C in the season-opener.
