HS hockey: Woburn boys make statement in 5-2 win over Belmont
WALTHAM — It is probably time to buy in on what is developing within Woburn’s young hockey program.
Junior forward Jack Lee registered a hat trick to go with an assist, as the Tanners left Bentley Arena with a complete 5-2 victory over archrival Belmont.
Entering the weekend, Woburn was ranked fourth in the MIAA’s initial set of Div. 2 power rankings (with a 2.4505 team rating). The Middlesex League’s Tanners, facing a perennial Div. 1 contender that had given them fits in the past, did not start off the way that some had envisioned. The Tanners were assessed a tripping penalty just 1:10 into action, and the Marauders were quick to pounce on the power play as Leo Packard buried a beautiful backhanded goal in transition to put Belmont (3-5-1) ahead 1-0 with 12:10 to play in the period.
However, in a game where every edge counted, Woburn (6-1) would respond itself during an extended 5-on-3 advantage moments later.
“Our captain Jack McEleney reminded us to stay on it,” Lee said afterward. “Keep going, send pucks deep. Stay on the forecheck, and I think we did that.”
It was McEleney who set Lee up for his first goal of the day, as the junior slid a shot five-hole to tie things at 1-all midway through the first.
In the second period, Woburn struck for consecutive tallies in a 2:55 span, with the same two catalysts pacing the charge. McEleney and Lee each sniped the cage, as the Tanners took a 3-1 lead into the third. From then on, they iced away the victory with containment.
With 6:10 to play, Lee collected a loose puck in the slot, then uncorked a rocket of a shot. The attempt whistled into the upper corner of the net, completing the hat trick for the junior.
“Matt Mahoney and Jack (McEleney) made a great play behind the net,” Lee said. “Great job winning the (scrum) battle there. I had all day, so (I shot it).”
Finn Murphy would tack on a goal with 45.1 seconds remaining to cap the scoring for Woburn. McEleney (goal, assist) and Hayden LaPrade (two assists) also contributed.
Belmont received a late goal with 5:42 left from freshman forward Liam Guilderson.
“We’re a very unselfish team,” said Woburn coach Jim Duran. “We’ve just got to keep moving our feet, doing the best we can with some of the guys we have. We do have some seniors, but our junior class is probably our biggest class. We have a lot of guys that are playing that don’t have a ton of experience. … We’ve just got to keep going, and I thought we played a total game tonight for us in all three zones.”
