High school roundup: Innovation Academy fueled by Derrick Twum’s 29 points
Derrick Twum scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Jayden Ogbeide recorded a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds as Innovation (4-3) defeated Minuteman 69-62 in Commonwealth Athletic Conference boys basketball action.
In the Hockomock League, junior Matt Greenspoon scored 17 points and senior Eli Connor added 14 points as Stoughton won 53-46 over Foxboro. … Troy Santos finished with 15 points as Taunton edged Attleboro 60-56.
Anthony Forte dropped 31 points as Peabody cruised to a 74-42 win over Northeastern Conference opponent Winthrop.
Amir Jenkins scored 16 points as Worcester North defeated Windsor (Conn.) 86-69 at the Hoophall Classic.
Girls basketball
Dyanna Grant Johnson scored 16 points, while Ava Martin added 15 points and nine rebounds as Somerville defeated Chelsea 70-14 in the Greater Boston League.
In nonleague action, Mariah Lorenzo notched all 19 of her points in the second half while Rowan Murphy also netted 19 points while hitting 9-of-12 from the Charity stripe in a 69-64 victory for Greater Lowell (3-4) over New Heights.
Lacrosse
The Margin Of Victory component in the power rankings came up several times during the MIAA Lacrosse Committee meeting Thursday morning. Andover athletic director Wayne Puglisi said the coaches are in favor of dropping the current MOV from 10 goals to six and stressed the importance of making sure the Tournament Management Committee was aware of the proposal.
In other news, MIAA Lacrosse Tournament Director Dan Brothers said he is in the process of securing postseason venues for the tournament though he cautioned this year could present issues as Father’s Day weekend (June 15-17) falls on the same dates as the state championships. Brothers said he has reached out to past tourney venues Boston University, Harvard, Worcester State and Bentley to gauge their interest and availability.
Notre Dame’s Meredith McGinnis brought up the possibility of cutting down the maximum number of girls games in a season from 20 to 18 if the cutoff date is moved from the traditional Memorial Day Monday date. She pointed to scheduling concerns if those extra days are no longer available to play as well as a growing shortage of officials.
Soccer
The second annual A Shot For Life Courage Cup will be held at the Union Point Sports Complex in Weymouth on Sunday, Jan. 21 from 2-6 p.m. A soccer event featuring the top players in the state, the girls division will play from 2:10-4 p.m., with the boys following at approximately 4:10 p.m.
All players have committed to raising at least $1,000 for the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, with an award going to the player that is the highest fundraiser.
