Gophers football: Division II receiver Jaylen Varner commits to the U

The Gophers football program hopes a small-school transfer’s production can somewhat translate to the Big Ten Conference next season.

Jaylen Varner, a transfer wide receiver from Division II program Emporia State, committed to Minnesota on Monday. He has one year of eligibility remaining for the U.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound product from Marshall, Mo., had 90 receptions for 1,008 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He had a combined 87 catches for 969 yards and 14 scores across 2021-22.

The Gophers also added a transfer receiver, Cristian Driver of Penn State, on Sunday.

Minnesota has now added seven total players via the NCAA transfer portal and has lost seven players via the portal — excluding the five players who committed to the U but then backed out of their pledges within one month.
