Wild rally late, push Marc-Andre Fleury into tie for second play on career wins list
COLUMBUS, Ohio — All but dead with under 2 minutes to play, the Wild rallied to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in overtime, 4-3, and push Marc-Andre Fleury into a tie for second place in career wins by a goaltender.
Matt Boldy scored twice, Marcus Johansson tied the game with 1:32 remaining in regulation and Marco Rossie scored in the three-on-three overtime as the Wild snapped a four-game losing streak.
Fleury stopped 25 shots for his 551st career win, tying Patrick Roy for the second most all time by an NHL goalie. And he worked overtime for it.
Leaving the ice for an extra attacker with Minnesota trailing and less than 2 minutes remaining, Marc-Andre Fleury did an about face and raced back to the net.
Columbus center Justin Danforth had gained control of the puck and was racing toward the empty net for what would have been the game-sealing goal when Fleury dove in front of the crease and disrupt his shot.
Seconds later, Marcus Johansson scored the tying goal when his backhander trickled through Danil Tarasov’s 5 hole with 1:32 remaining in regulation to tie the game 3-3.
Cole Sillinger recorded a hat trick, the second of his career, and Danil Tarasov stopped 33 shots as the Blue Jackets lost for the fifth time in eight games.
With Jon Merrill in the penalty box for tripping, Sillinger scored 5 seconds into a power play, deflecting a shot past Fleury for the go-ahead goal with 5 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
Sillinger gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead when he skated into the slot and one-timed a pass from Jake Bean into an open corner at 8:09 of the first period.
With Alexandre Texier in the box for holding Jon Merrill’s stick on a forecheck, the Wild quickly tied the score.
Joel Eriksson Ek won the faceoff, got the puck back to Brock Faber then went straight to the crease. With Eriksson Ek in Tarasov’s face, Boldy took a pass from Faber at the top of the circle and one-time a slap shot in to make it 1-1 at 14:48. It took just 4 seconds out of the man advantage.
Columbus quickly regained the lead in the second period.
On the first shift, Kirill Marchenko stole the puck from Jake Middleton, who was trying to skate it out of the Wild’s zone, and sent a behind-the-back pass to Sillinger, who was trailing. Sillinger collected the pass and sent a wrist shot top shelf to beat Fleury for a 2-1 lead just 17 seconds into the period.
Again, Body tied the game on a power play.
With Erik Gundbranson in the box for tripping Alex Goligoski, Boldy skated a puck into the slot and sent a backhander past Tarasov to make it 2-2 at 10:15.
