Gophers women’s hockey finishes two-game sweep of UConn with 3-1 victory
The Gophers women’s hockey team wrapped up the nonconference portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over No. 11 Connecticut at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota beat UConn 5-3 on Friday in the first game of the two-game series.
The Gophers improved their record to 16-3-1.
“A really good weekend for us,” Gophers head coach Brad Frost said. “Getting a sweep over a really good UConn team who is very good out east. They are really tough to play against, but I’m proud of our team for sticking with it.”
Fifth-year defender Madeline Wethington opened the scoring for the Gophers just 2:48 into the game with her second goal of the weekend.
The Gophers dominated the second period, adding two goals and outshooting the Huskies 17-7. Sophomore Josefin Bouveng and freshman Lauren O’Hara each added goals in the period.
UConn got on the board in the third period to break up the shutout.
Minnesota goaltender Skylar Vetter made 23 saves for her eighth victory of the season.
The Gophers return to Ridder Arena on Jan. 12-13 for a series against top-ranked Ohio State as the U settles into the WCHA portion of its season.
