Douglas is expected to coach receivers and add responsibility in the offense under new Syracuse coach Fran Brown, a source said. Douglas leaves with four games left in the Patriots’ season. He originally joined the organization as a defensive quality control coach in 2021 through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program, then flipped to his current position before the 2022 season.

Douglas, 29, became the youngest position coach in the NFL when Belichick moved him to offense that winter. He coached receivers the past two seasons with receivers/returners coach Troy Brown. Douglas originally entered the coaching ranks at Rutgers, where he played in college and crossed paths with Brown, then spent one season at Richmond before getting pulled to New England.

Douglas was recently named to the NFL Network’s annual list of assistants on the rise. Multiple Patriots players told the Herald they could see him as a future head coach and/or offensive coordinator.

Douglas is the second offensive assistant to step away this season, after offensive line coach Adrian Klemm was forced to leave the team due to health reasons. It’s unknown whether Klemm will return this year.
