Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks hospitalized after suffering shin contusion

Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks was rushed to a local hospital immediately following Sunday’s 27-19 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

After suffering a shin contusion early in the game, and briefly returning to action, Hicks ended up needing to have emergency surgery to reduce the swelling in his lower leg. He remained in the hospital on Monday afternoon, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell, who planned to go visit him.

“It is something more than likely that will cause him to miss at least this week,” Hicks said. “We will make sure Jordan continues to get that great care, and hope to have him back in the facility as soon as possible.”

Asked for more clarification about the situation, O’Connell noted that Hicks developed compartment syndrome, a condition caused by pressure buildup from internal bleeding or swelling of tissues. It can be very dangerous if not treated with the proper care. That’s why the Vikings acted as quickly as they did on this after the game.

“Sometimes things like this can pop up,” O’Connell said. “That’s why I’ve talked many times about our medical staff and our resources here. We couldn’t do the job we do without them and their decision-making and care. The urgency at which they’ve handled the situation was very critical.”
