Throwback Thursday
Recycling is nothing new, but back in the day one really had to work to find those redeemables. When this Nov. 15, 1950 AP photo was taken, Navy diver Joseph Lesser was emerging from the waters off the Quonset Point, R.I. Naval Air Station with soda bottles salvaged from the muddy bottom. The bottles were sold back to bottling companies with proceeds going to the Navy recreation fund.
