Canada October 2023: Volvo (+40.9%), Toyota (+37.5%), Kia (+35.5%) help lift market up 20%

Kia Sportage sales more than double year-on-year in Canada.

Estimates by local consultancy DesRosiers Automotive have the Canadian new light vehicle market up 20% year-on-year in October to 145,957 units. Keep in mind October 2022 was particularly weak as the lowest October in 13 years. This is the 12th consecutive month of year-on-year gains for this market. The last time that occurred was in November 2015 which was the last month in an incredible 32 consecutive months of year-on-year lifts. Note Ford will now only report sales annually and is therefore excluded from this update. The SAAR is at 1.79 million, the highest since January and to be compared with 1.49 million a year ago in October 2022.

Among groups still reporting monthly, Toyota Motor (+33%) and Hyundai-Kia (+23.6%) beat the market while Honda Canada (+14.1%) is softer. Brand-wise, Volvo (+40.9%), Toyota (+37.5%), Kia (+35.5%) and Genesis (+28%) fare best, Honda (+20.2%) and Subaru (+19.8%) match the market, Hyundai (+15%) and Lexus (+6.5%) post more moderate upticks while Acura (-27.4%) freefalls.

The Toyota RAV4 (+61.4%), Honda CR-V (+39.8%) and Subaru Crosstrek (+136.3%) all post fantastic results among models with monthly data available. The Honda Civic (+7.9%) and Toyota Corolla (+2.4%) are weaker but the Civic overtakes the Corolla in the YTD order, returning to its long-held position as the country’s best-selling passenger car. Outstanding month as well for the Kia Niro (+42600%) thanks to the new generation, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (+261.5%), Mazda CX-50 (+146.7%), Kia Sportage (+117.8%), Mazda3 (+95.5%), Hyundai Venue (+90.5%) and Santa Fe (+85.3%).
