Source: Patriots re-signing Malik Cunningham to practice squad

The Patriots are re-signing quarterback/wide receiver Malik Cunningham to their practice squad, according to a source.

Cunningham was waived by the Patriots on Tuesday. He cleared waivers Wednesday at 4 p.m. before agreeing to rejoin the practice squad.

Head coach Bill Belichick said Wednesday morning that the Patriots planned to bring Cunningham back to the practice squad as long as another team didn’t claim him. Belichick said waiving Cunningham on Tuesday was what was “best for the team.”

How Patriots could fill open spot on 53-man roster created by Malik Cunningham cut

Cunningham started the 2023 season on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster ahead of Week 6.

Cunningham has played wide receiver, quarterback and special teams for the Patriots since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville.

Cunningham was only active for one game, the Patriots’ Week 6 loss to the Raiders. They signed him to their 53-man roster to back up Mac Jones at quarterback and provide additional wide receiver depth. They added him to the 53-man roster, rather than elevating him, in Week 6 so they could use the emergency third quarterback designation on Bailey Zappe. Both active quarterbacks and the emergency third QB all have to be on the 53-man roster.
