Red Sox game times to remain unchanged in 2024

Over the past three seasons the Red Sox have settled into a standard set of start times throughout the week, and those times will remain the same next season as well.

According to a Red Sox spokesperson, home games at Fenway Park will continue to start at 7:10 p.m. on weeknights, 4:10 p.m. on Saturdays and 1:35 p.m. on Sundays in 2024. Some start times may vary due to getaway days, national broadcasts or special occasions like the tradition 11 a.m. Patriots Day game, but the default times will remain unchanged.

The Red Sox have stuck with the same set of start times despite an increased prevalence of clubs starting night games earlier, usually at 6:40 p.m. The Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies are among the teams who have made the change in recent years, in large part to compensate for the increased length of games that — prior to the introduction of the pitch clock — often resulted in games stretching well past 10 p.m.

Last offseason the Red Sox indicated they’d explored moving their start times up as well, but the club ultimately opted to stand pat. Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy said at the time they felt the pitch clock would effectively address the issue of late-ending games without the drawbacks that an earlier start would present.

“We prefer as many traditional games as we can for night time starts in the 7 p.m. hour,” Kennedy said prior to this past season. “Obviously we have city concerns and traffic concerns and the ingress and egress out of Fenway Park, it’s better for television, it’s better for the certainty of play. That said we are open minded about adjusting start times and I think you will see some different start times but generally with the rule changes that are going to pick up the pace of the game I think the 7 p.m. window is the right time to start night games.”

The pitch clock did have a dramatic impact on the length of games, helping reduce the average Red Sox game from 3:11 in 2022 to 2:45 in 2023, a decrease of 26 minutes. That means the average night game in 2022 ended at approximately 10:21 p.m. but at only 9:55 p.m. this past season, a difference that would have made it easier for fans who had to be up early for work or school the next day to watch the entire game.

Clearly the Red Sox feel as though they’ve found the sweet spot, so fans can expect a similar experience timing-wise at Fenway Park next season.
