Virginia Tech rolls over Boston College 48-22 at Alumni Stadium
Boston College’s five-game win streak collapsed under a system wide breakdown.
Virginia Tech scored 31 points in the first half and rolled over BC 48-22 before 33,665 on a spectacular, sun-splashed Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
BC fell to 6-4, 3-3 in the ACC, and resumes league play on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Panthers at Acrisure Stadium. The Hokies improved to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.
“When you go on a couple of games win streak you have to be focused, be on your details and execute at a high level and if you don’t you get humbled pretty quick,” said BC coach Jeff Hafley. “We have to flip the page quickly and this group will respond as we’ve done it all year.”
Tech quarterback Kyon Jones ripped through the BC defense on the ground and in the air before exiting the fray after three quarters. Jones rushed for 135yards on 20 carries and completed 12-of-17 passing for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Tech had 600 yards of offense on 72 plays and were five-of-five in red zone scoring chances.
“We knew they were going to run their quarterback and we had chanced to get him down,” said Hafley. “There was some stuff schematically but I’m not surprised, he’s a good runner and they have good backs.”
BC dynamic dual threat quarterback Thomas Castellanos suffered through a tough performance. Castellanos rushed for 46 yards on 11 carries and completed 10-of-20 passes for 110 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown. BC has 262 yards of total offense and were 3-of-12 on third down.
The Eagles imploded in all three phases in the first half and were never a serious threat to the Hokies. BC got into trouble on the opening snap of the game when Castellanos’ drop back pass to Jaden Williams was intercepted by junior safety Jalen Stroman on the Eagles’ 37. The BC defense clamped down in the red zone and held the Hokies to a 27-yard field goal by John Love with 12:40 to play.
Castellanos made amends with an eight-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Broome ran for 36 yards to the Tech four and scored on the next play to make it 7-3 with nine minutes on the board. That would be all the offense BC would generate until garbage time in the fourth quarter.
Castellanos’ second deep pass of the game went the same way as the first. Stroman won a 50-50 ball with Dino Tomlin for his second pick on the Tech 31. The Hokies converted the turnover into a touchdown with an 11-play, 69-yard drive. The trek ended on a seven-yard run up the middle by tailback Bhayshul Tuten to make it 10-7 with 1:28 to play in the first.
The Hokies caught the Eagles’ return team flatfooted with a successful onside kick that was recovered on the Tech 49. The Hokies went up 17-7 on a 22-yard pass from Drones to split end Stephen Gosnell with 13:07 to play in the second.
“They had the two interceptions and an onside kick and we just never recovered from that and the score got out of hand pretty quickly,” said Hafley. “We never got in a rhythm on how we wanted to play the game.”
Tech opened its next possession with a 59-yard run by Drones to the BC 16. Drones made it 24-7 with a five-yard toss to Jaylen Lane on a wheel route with 7:04 to play in the half.
Drones got Tech’s final scoring drive of the first half going with a 70-yard hookup with Da’Quan Felton to the BC 9. Tuten scored on a 5-yard run up the middle to make it 31-7 with 1:37 to play in the half.
Virginia Tech opened the second half with a with a 10-play, 76-yard drive to make it 38-7 with 8:50 to play. Tuten powered through the Eagles’ front seven from the four for his third TD of the game.
BC cut the lead to 38-15 with a 13-play, 65-yard drive on an 8-yard touchdown toss from Castellanos to Jaedn Skeete. Hokies’ tailback Malachi Thomas scored on a 35-yard run on the opening play of the fourth quarter to make 45-15.
