Alex Cora explains why Red Sox rookie’s rehab has been ‘eye-opening’

After going on the 10-day injured list last week with a sprained ankle, Wilyer Abreu is already running with the pack, literally.

“It bothers him a little bit turning, but nothing serious,” Alex Cora said of Abreu’s progression, which included running on the field during Wednesday’s pregame activities. “I think he’s progressing the right way, and we just gotta be smart about it, but he’s put himself in a great spot.”

“It’s been eye-opening, the way he has attacked the rehab and the willingness to push hard to get back on the field,” the Red Sox manager added. “He will be with us sooner rather than later.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Cora said he anticipated Abreu needing just one rehab game before coming off the IL.

“I think I got ahead of myself on that one,” he said with a smile, “but he’ll probably play one down (in the minors) whenever he’s ready.”

Abreu, 24, is putting together an all-around impressive rookie season. He’s currently in the 74th MLB percentile or better in Batting Run Value (74th), Baserunning Run Value (86th), Fielding Run Value (83rd), and Outs Above Average (79th), and in the 92nd percentile in Arm Value and 98th in Arm Strength. Among qualified rookies, he’s first in doubles (14), tied for third in triples (2) and home runs (6) and ranks sixth in hits (46).

Triston Casas still isn’t swinging.

Romy Gonzalez will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.

No. 9 prospect Luis Perales was in the Red Sox clubhouse on Wednesday afternoon. Though the right-hander, 21, is in town to undergo an MRI on his elbow on Thursday, Cora said the organization was optimistic.
