Four Nations title game to be played at Garden
Even without David Pastrnak and his Czech-mates, the Four Nations tournament set for next February should be plenty of fun for Boston hockey fans.
The NHL and NHLPA announced on Saturday evening the schedule for the new international round robin tournament which will start on February 12 and culminate on Feb. 20 with the championship game at TD Garden.
The first four games of the tourney – which includes the US, Canada, Sweden and Finland – will be played at Montreal’s Bell Centre before shifting to Boston for the final three games. There will be a Presidents’ Day double-header on February 17 with Canada taking on Finland at 1 pm and Sweden vs. US at 8 pm. The title game is scheduled for 8 pm on Feb. 20.
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly called the two cities as “iconic” in the sport.
“We could have put (the tourney) anywhere but those two rose to the top and we worked with both of the clubs and they were very cooperative and both very excited about hosting, so we’re looking forward to being there,” said Daly prior to Saturday’s Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.
The reason for keeping the tourney to just four teams was two-fold, said commissioner Gary Bettman. First, there was a concern to keep the schedule tight, given that it’s an in-season tournament. Secondly, the rosters will be comprised exclusively of NHL players and those countries are best equipped to stock teams.
The first six players from each team will be announced on June 28.
Bettman also announced the salary cap for next season will bump up to $88 million, which will give the Bruins just over $21.2 million in cap space, according to capfriendly.com.
