Red Sox reinstate Pivetta from injured list to face Sale, and other roster moves
The Red Sox’s Jenga-esque battle with the roster and injured list continues.
On Wednesday, the club announced they’d reinstated Nick Pivetta (mild flexor strain) and Romy Gonzalez (wrist) from the 15- and 10-day injured lists, respectively.
Pivetta will start against former rotation-mate Chris Sale in Atlanta on Wednesday night, with Gonzalez playing first and batting seventh.
To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Naoyuki Uwasawa to Triple-A Worcester and designated infielder Zack Short for assignment.
After exiting Sunday’s series finale in Minnesota with left-hamstring tightness, Rob Refsnyder will sit out again on Wednesday. Though Alex Cora noted postgame that they needed the veteran utility-man – who excels against left-handed pitching – in the lineup against Sale, the decision is precautionary. Sources told the Herald there are no plans to place Refsnyder on the injured list at the present.
