St. John’s Prep posts signature boys lacrosse win at Lincoln-Sudbury, 10-6
SUDBURY — The battle between the No. 1 and 2 ranked boys lacrosse teams in Division 1 turned into a statement win for visiting St. John’s Prep on Tuesday.
The top-ranked Eagles put the clamps on Lincoln-Sudbury’s potent offense and, led by a hat trick from Cam McCarthy, rolled to a 10-6 win.
“They’ve set the standard for the last 15 years,” St. John’s coach John Pynchon said about the Warriors. “So it’s good to come out and get contributions from everyone and a great team win.”
The Eagles (12-1) never trailed as their suffocating defense made getting quality shots off a challenge for L-S.
The Warriors managed only four shots on net in the opening 24 minutes as the teams had nearly equal possession, but the Prep was able to take advantage of its chances.
Luke Kelly gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead midway through the first quarter before McCarthy got the first of his three goals to give St. John’s a 2-0 lead after one.
“Cam really leads us and he just loves the game,” Pynchon said. “It’s fun to coach a kid like that.”
McCarthy got another one early in the second quarter before Josh Haarman followed moments later to make it 4-0 Eagles.
The Warriors had a golden chance to get on the board midway through the quarter when they went two men up. The Eagles killed off the disadvantage, but Kaedan Ryan score moments later for L-S to cut the deficit to 4-1 at the break.
The third quarter belonged to the Eagles as they blew the game open.
Ben Morena got things started for St. John’s less than two minutes in. Grayson Ambrosh’s transition goal followed to make it 6-1. McCarthy then added a man up goal with 6:27 left before Rex Friedholm stopped the bleeding for the Warriors.
Jack Doherty got that one back off the ensuing face off for St. John’s, as they lead 8-2 after three. The teams would trade goals through the fourth quarter as the Eagles rolled off the clock to clinch the win.
“We played a really good third quarter,” Pynchon said. “We were able to step up and convert on a couple of good chances.”
