Injuries continue to bedevil Wild
EDMONTON, Alberta — Injuries continue to devil the Wild, who landed here Thursday afternoon without some big bodies who might have been able to slow down the red-hot, high-scoring Edmonton Oilers.
Add Zach Bogosian to the injury list after the veteran defenseman left Tuesday’s 6-3 loss at Winnipeg in the first period with an upper-body injury.
“He’ll be out for these next two games,” was coach John Hynes’ brief update after a practice Thursday morning at TRIA Rink. That second game is Saturday night in Seattle.
The Oilers lost in overtime to Boston on Wednesday but have won 20 of their past 25 games and haven’t lost consecutive games since a three-game skid Dec 14-19.
Also missing are Pat Maroon, on injured reserve with a back injury, and Marcus Foligno, a team leader and critical piece of the forecheck and penalty kill, second to only Joel Eriksson Ek (plus-13) among forwards with a plus-12 rating this season.
Foligno hasn’t played since playing a 12-second shift to start the third period after being tripped in the second of a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Feb. 9.
“Nothing yet on Foligno,” Hynes said when asked if he had an update.
None of those players will be available on the last leg of a three-game Western Conference road trip that started Tuesday in Winnipeg. Asked what that means for the Wild — who recalled Mason Shaw from AHL Iowa last week — Hynes said, “Well, it shouldn’t change.”
Minnesota is 5-1-1 since returning from the all-star break with a victory at Chicago on Feb. 7 and has jumped three places in the conference standings. Before Thursday night’s games, the Wild were two points behind St. Louis for the West’s second wild-card spot.
“We’ve been able to not change the style of game that we play, but I think the guys that are in the lineup are playing to their identities and have been effective,” the coach added. “Now, we’re going to have to have the same thing on the blue line.”
Chisholm trail
Rookie Declan Chisholm, claimed off waivers from Winnipeg on Jan. 29, has a goal and assist, and is a minus-1, in three games with the Wild. He has essentially taken the role Alex Goligoski was playing, including running the second unit of the Wild’s power play.
“Every time you get injuries, you’re asking guys to not take over someone’s role but take responsibility for someone’s situations and minutes,” Hynes said. “So, we’ll see how it goes.”
It’s unclear who will replace Bogosian. The Wild have seven healthy defensemen. Hynes also didn’t reveal whether Filip Gustavsson or Marc-Andre Fleury would start against the Oilers at Rogers Place, where Edmonton is riding a nine-game points streak (8-0-1).
Briefly
Oilers center Connor McDavid ranks third in the NHL in points (21-64—85) and has a 20-game home point streak (12 goals, 36 assists).
