JLo’s romance captured in “This is Me… Now A Love Story”
Jennifer Lopez may have lost the challenge of being on time, but she has defied the odds and the naysayers to produce, co-write and star in “This is Me… Now, A Love Story,” her fantastical, very personal musical that streams Friday.
For her global virtual press conference Lopez, 54, was nearly an hour late and skipping an apology, immediately plunged into a discussion of this unique concert film with her director Dave Meyers.
“This was something that was really inspired by the music and a moment in my life that I wanted to capture. One that seemed very magical and even surreal at times that it was happening.
“I went in to see you,” she said of Meyers, a veteran of literally hundreds of music videos, including Lopez’s 2001 “I’m Real.”
She worked on the album and, Lopez said, “When it was done, I thought to myself, there’s something more to this story. There’s something bigger I want to do with this music. I just don’t want to do the normal — put out a video and do this promo and blah, blah, blah. I just felt there was a bigger message.
“So we sat down and talked about it. I played him some of the music and I said, I want to do something. I don’t know exactly what I want to do. Which is kind of why I think we’ve created something that hadn’t really been done.
“It didn’t fit into any one kind of specific category. It’s not part of a video. What story? Something very original. We sat down, we talked about it and I sang it to Dave.
“And then he really honed in on it. Like, ‘Well, that’s the story! What you just told me is what we should do.’”
But when they did the rounds, trying to find funding for a film that’s fantastical and stylized with an outstanding lineup of celebrity cameos, it was a no go.
“When we started putting it down on paper, trying to describe it to people? They didn’t really quite get it,” she acknowledged.
“The more impossible it is,” Meyers said, “Jennifer is all for it. When everybody passed on the film, Jen funded it herself. Her spirit is to rise above anybody. That was evident to me as a partner.”
“What the movie shows is there have been struggles and hard times that no one knew about but myself,” Lopez added.
“It’s made me more comfortable in my own skin and empowered me in a way to step into this next phase of my life that will be a whole new chapter with a feeling more free to express myself.”
