Twins claim right-hander Daniel Duarte off waivers
The Twins on Friday claimed right-handed pitcher Daniel Duarte off waivers from the Texas Rangers. Duarte appeared in 31 games for the Cincinnati Reds last season, going 3-0 with a 3.69 earned-run average.
Major league waiver rules require the Twins to put Duarte on the 26-man active roster. To make room, they DFA’d right-hander Ryan Jensen, claimed off waivers from Miami on Jan. 4.
The Twins begin spring training on Feb. 14, when pitchers and catchers are required to report to the team’s facility in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Duarte, 27, has a 4.19 ERA in 34 major league appearances, all with Cincinnati in 2022 and 2023. Last season, he pitched 31⅔ innings — all in relief — with a save, 23 strikeouts, 20 walks and .211 opponent batting average and a 1.39 WHIP. In 32 games with Class AAA Louisville, the 6-foot, 235-pound reliever was 4-0 with seven saves, 17 walks, 39 strikeouts, a 1.17 WHIP and a .192 opponent batting average in 35 innings.
The Twins have 40 players on their 40-man roster: 21 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders, seven outfielders and two utility players.
