2027 Lexus NX Goes Hybrid-Only with More Power, 45 Miles of Electric Range, and a Fresh New Look
The days of buying a gasoline-only Lexus NX are officially over, but before anyone starts mourning the loss of another traditional powertrain, Lexus has some rather compelling upgrades in store for its popular compact luxury SUV. For 2027, the NX lineup is going exclusively hybrid, offering buyers a choice between the conventional NX 350h hybrid and the more powerful NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid. The move represents a significant shift for one of Lexus’ most important models, although it isn’t particularly surprising given the brand’s longstanding commitment to hybrid technology. As detailed in a recent report from Autoevolution and confirmed by Lexus’ official announcement, the 2027 NX also receives revised styling, additional horsepower, improved battery technology, and a more upscale interior. It’s a substantial collection of improvements that could make the NX even more appealing in an increasingly competitive luxury crossover market.
The biggest changes are found beneath the hood, where Lexus has refined its hybrid powertrains to deliver better performance and efficiency. The 2027 NX 350h combines a revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with electric assistance to produce 244 horsepower, a modest four-horsepower increase over the previous model. Lexus has also reworked the engine block to improve rigidity while reducing unwanted noise and vibration, something that should make the NX feel even more refined during everyday driving. For buyers wanting considerably more muscle, the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid now produces 324 horsepower, up from 304 horsepower in the outgoing version. A more powerful 203-horsepower front electric motor and an upgraded lithium-ion battery help deliver the additional performance. Even better, Lexus estimates the plug-in hybrid can travel up to 45 miles on electric power alone, making it possible for many owners to handle their daily commutes without using much gasoline. The addition of DC fast-charging capability with a NACS charging port further improves the NX 450h+’s practicality.
While the NX retains its familiar overall shape, Lexus has made several thoughtful exterior updates to give the 2027 model a more contemporary appearance. Revised front and rear styling incorporates subtle aerodynamic improvements, while black exterior trim replaces some of the previous chrome accents for a slightly sportier look. The rear lighting also adopts a new double-L signature that gives the NX a more distinctive appearance at night. Lexus is expanding the exterior color palette to nine choices, including three new additions: Shaded Ivy, Incognito, and Iridium, with the latter replacing Atomic Silver. Buyers who prefer a more aggressive appearance can opt for the F Sport treatment, which adds unique aerodynamic accents, including revised lower spoilers, side details, and rear styling elements. We appreciate that Lexus hasn’t tried to completely reinvent the NX’s design, as its sharp lines and distinctive styling have helped it stand apart from more conservatively designed competitors.
Inside, the 2027 Lexus NX continues its push toward a more modern and luxurious driving environment. A redesigned steering wheel features updated Lexus branding and a slightly smaller diameter, while the dashboard incorporates a standard 14-inch infotainment touchscreen alongside a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. Making the larger center screen standard across the lineup is a particularly welcome improvement, eliminating the need to select a more expensive trim simply to enjoy the better display. Lexus is also introducing two new interior colors, Radiant Red and Abalos, with the latter drawing inspiration from the sand dunes found in the northern hemisphere of Mars. Yes, you read that correctly. Lexus has apparently found a little inspiration on the Red Planet, although the resulting interior treatment is intended to deliver a sophisticated, earthy appearance rather than anything resembling a science-fiction spacecraft.
Lexus will offer the 2027 NX in Premium, Premium+, F Sport, and Luxury grades, with the NX 350h available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations depending on the trim. The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid comes exclusively with all-wheel drive, giving buyers additional traction along with its extra horsepower and electric driving capability. Both powertrains incorporate updated electric drive components designed to improve efficiency and reduce weight. The NX 350h will continue to be manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Ontario, while the plug-in hybrid NX 450h+ will be produced at Toyota’s Kyushu facility in Japan. Lexus hasn’t released official pricing yet, although more information is expected as the refreshed crossover approaches its U.S. sales launch.
We think the 2027 Lexus NX represents a sensible direction for the luxury brand, especially as more buyers look for improved fuel efficiency without committing to a fully electric vehicle. Lexus has been refining hybrid technology for decades, and the latest NX appears to benefit from that experience with smoother operation, additional performance, and greater everyday usability. The NX 450h+ is particularly intriguing, as its 45-mile estimated electric driving range could make it an excellent option for drivers who want EV-like convenience during the week but prefer the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer trips. Of course, much will depend on pricing and how the updated models perform once we get behind the wheel. Still, with more horsepower, improved technology, and some welcome styling refinements, the 2027 Lexus NX looks ready to strengthen its position as one of the more appealing choices in the compact luxury SUV segment.
