The Mercedes GLC hits a ranking record at #4.

268,068 new cars hit German roads in July, a small 1.2% year-on-year lift. The year-to-date tally is now up 5.1% to 1,752,461. This is to be compared with the 332,788 sales of pre-pandemic July 2019 and 2,818,788 units at the same stage of the year in 2019. BEV sales surge 61.7% year-on-year to 78,609 and 29.3% share vs. 18.4% a year ago in July 2025 and 12.8% in July 2024. Year-to-date BEV registrations soar 50.2% to 446,615 and 25.5% share vs. 17.8% over the same period in 2025 and 12.6% two years ago. Meanwhile PHEV sales are up 12.5% to 30,609 and 11.4% share vs. 10.3% a year ago and are up 17% YTD to 194,402 and 11.1% share vs. 10% last year.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-7.6%) loses significant ground YoY but still manages 17.9% share, only slightly below its YTD level of 18.4%. Mercedes (+8%) is very solid hitting its highest share since last November at 9.9%. It climbs back up to #2 in the YTD order, a ranking it also held over the Full Year 2025. BMW (+0.5%) is stable and down one spot on June to #3, as is Skoda (-0.2%) to #4. Audi (+1.5%) is stuck in 5th place well below its premium rivals. Renault (+32.3%) and Cupra (+31.5%) deliver the biggest YoY gains in the Top 10 by far, both up two ranks on last month to #10 and #9 respectively. Further down, BYD surges 365.4% to #17 but a still modest 2% share, with Leapmotor (+328.8%) – up to 1% share, MG (+86.2%), Xpeng (+371.1%) and Smart (+106.6%) also very impressive. Newcomer Geely is up 8 spots to #34 just as Tesla (-66.9%) crashes to #36 with just 367 sales.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (+28.1%) surprises with a splendid YoY gain. In contrast the VW T-Roc (-34.8%), #1 a year ago, is in complete freefall at #2. The BMW X1 (+11.8%) continues to soar and climbs two spots on last month to #3. 52% of its July volume comes from the iX1 BEV version. The Mercedes GLC (+53.4%) does even better and reaches a record 4th place, also hit in August 2020. The BEV variant holds 27%. As a result the VW Tiguan (-3.4%) is relegated to #5, its worst showing since June 2024. The Mini lineup (+19.3%) threepeats at #6 but it’s the BMW X3 (+104.5%) that delivers the biggest gain in the Top 10, up to #8 with the iX3 BEV variant accounting for 37% of its July volume. The Mercedes CLA (+148.8%), Audi A6 (+50.3%) and Skoda Elroq (+48.7%) also shine below. Once again the Renault Twingo (#71, +47) is the best-selling recent launch, distancing the Kia EV2 (#77, +43) and Cupra Raval (#84, +53).
