2027 Ford Explorer ST Sinister Package Brings Blacked-Out Style and a Driving School Bonus

Ford is giving its performance-oriented Explorer ST a darker personality for the 2027 model year with the introduction of the new Sinister Package. Designed exclusively for the Explorer ST trim, the appearance package leans heavily into the growing demand for blacked-out styling while adding a few unique touches that help the SUV stand out from the crowd. While the name may suggest something dramatic, the changes are more subtle than revolutionary, focusing primarily on aesthetics rather than performance upgrades.

The Sinister Package delivers what Ford describes as a fully blacked-out look. Buyers will find unique amber daytime running lights, exclusive ST badging, and a set of 21-inch gloss black wheels that complement the SUV’s aggressive stance. Interestingly, despite the package’s dark theme, Ford isn’t limiting customers to black exterior paint. In fact, buyers can pair the Sinister Package with any available Explorer ST color, allowing for some interesting combinations that go beyond the traditional blackout treatment.

While some enthusiasts may have hoped for additional performance enhancements to accompany the sinister branding, the package remains strictly cosmetic. That said, the $1,695 price tag feels relatively reasonable in today’s market, especially considering how quickly appearance packages can inflate vehicle pricing. For buyers already considering an Explorer ST, the added cost may be an easy way to give the SUV a more customized and aggressive look without venturing into the aftermarket.

Ford says the package was inspired by feedback from its enthusiast community, continuing a trend among automakers to engage more directly with passionate owners when developing special editions and appearance packages. Whether the changes are significant enough to justify the “Sinister” name will likely be debated online, but there is little doubt that black wheels, dark trim, and amber lighting remain popular styling choices among SUV buyers looking for a sportier appearance.

Alongside the launch of the Sinister Package, Ford is also bringing back the Explorer ST Experience. Available to buyers of new 2026 and 2027 Explorer ST models, the complimentary one-day professional driving school gives owners an opportunity to learn advanced vehicle dynamics and performance driving techniques from experienced instructors. The traveling program is scheduled to return this fall at locations across the United States, adding an extra layer of value to ownership and reinforcing the Explorer ST’s position as the most enthusiast-focused model in the lineup.
