The BYD Atto 2 is up to a record 13th place in April.

The Spanish new car market is uncharacteristically down year-on-year in May, albeit at a tiny -0.8% to 111,894 units. This is the first YoY drop since August 2024. The year-to-date volume is still in positive however at +5.9% to 519,531. Rechargeable cars (BEV+PHEV) soar 18% to 25,790 and 23.1% share vs. 19.4% a year ago, and are up 43.6% YTD to 111,514 and 21.4% share vs. 15.8% over the first 5 months of 2025. Private sales are up 4.5% to 47,796, company sales are stable at +0.9% to 34,584 whereas sales to rental companies single handedly pull the market into negative territory at -10% to 29,514. Year-to-date, private sales advance 6.4% to 221,436, company sales are at +4.8% to 163,237 and rental sales at +6.1% to 134,610. Looking at regions, Asturias (+56.8%) is by far the most dynamic, with La rioja (+41.1%), Murcia (+27.7%), Baleares (+26.5%), Castilla la Mancha (+24.7%), Navarra (+24.2%) and Aragon (+22.8%) also posting splendid scores but all-important Madrid (45.3% of national sales) sees its volume fall -3.7%.

In the brands ranking, Toyota (+2.7%) remains the dominant force at 8.6% share, distancing Volkswagen (-4.7%) and Renault (+0.8%). Kia (-10.2%) is up three spots on last month to #4 despite falling heavily year-on-year. Up to #2 last month, Seat (-12.8%) falls back to earth at #5. The rest of the Top 10 is in negative, with Mercedes (-1%) resisting best at #8. In contrast MG (-11.3%), Hyundai (-19.9%), Peugeot (-22%) and Dacia (-23%) are all hit hard. Ending the month just outside the Top 10, Audi is up a stellar 20.5% YoY. BYD surges 85.7% on a May 2025 result which broke all records at the time. It does the same this month at #12 with 4,519 sales and 4% share. Ebro (+206.6%), Tesla (+112.8%), Omoda (+81.3%) and Jaecoo (+77.1%) also impress below.

Model-wise, the Dacia Sandero (-20.9%) remains the best-seller despite a ghastly YoY fall. The Hyundai Tucson (+41.3%) surges to 2nd place vs. #9 so far this year, while the Seat Ibiza (+10.7%) drops one spot on last month to #3 but still ranks #2 year-to-date vs. #4 over the Full Year 2025. The Toyota Corolla (+11.6%) is also solid at #4 while the MG ZS (-12%) is up one rank to #5. Excellent performance also by the Opel Corsa (+19.3%) up to #7 and the MG 3 (+21.4%) breaking the Top 10 for the second time in the past three months at a record #10. The BYD Atto 2 (+1334.5%) is up 9 spots on last month to an all time high #13, eclipsing its previous best of #15 reached last February.
