GM Recalls 43,732 2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade SUVs Over Rear Wheel Lock-Up Risk

If you drive a 2022 Chevy Tahoe or Suburban, GMC Yukon or Yukon XL, or a Cadillac Escalade or Escalade ESV, you will want to pay attention to a new GM recall that centers on the 10-speed automatic transmission. GM says a transmission control valve inside the unit can wear more than expected, which can set off a chain reaction that is not just annoying, but potentially dangerous.

Here’s what’s happening in plain terms. Excessive wear can lead to an internal fluid leak, which can drop pressure in the transmission and cause certain valves to move when they should not. Drivers might notice unusually harsh shifts, and in rarer situations the issue can contribute to the rear wheels locking up when the transmission is trying to downshift from 8th gear. The scary part is that the lock-up could be brief or it could stay locked until the vehicle comes to a stop, which obviously ramps up the crash risk.

GM’s fix is software-based, and it’s designed to catch the wear early rather than waiting for a worst-case moment. Dealers will install updated transmission control module programming that monitors valve performance and can flag excessive wear roughly 10,000 miles before a lock-up could occur. If the system detects trouble, it will limit the transmission to 5th gear to help prevent the lock-up, and you will likely see a check engine light along with a reduced propulsion message in the cluster.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to begin going out on March 30, 2026, but you do not have to wait for the mail to be proactive. If your SUV has been shifting harshly or you just want peace of mind, it’s worth checking your VIN on NHTSA’s recall site and scheduling the free software update with your dealer. Newer 2023-and-up GM full-size SUVs already have updated programming from the factory, so this campaign is focused on a specific slice of the 2022 model-year lineup.
