High school roundup/scores: Javi Lopez ignites Central Catholic with standout game

In a nonleague matchup Sunday, Javi Lopez poured in a career-high 39 points as Central Catholic defeated St. John’s Prep, 74-57.

In other nonleague action, Brody Billone scored 22 points as Mansfield routed Bishop Feehan 74-52.

To win a share of the Catholic Central League, Archbishop Williams rallied from a 38-31 halftime deficit to take down St. Mary’s of Lynn, 83-77. Jadon Beatty (28 points) and Jake Olinto (26 points) led the way for the Bishops.

Mathaios Stamm and Bryson Mercedes each netted 14 points as Newton North (11-5) claimed the Bay State Carey Division title with a 58-53 win over Natick.

Girls basketball

Camden Strandberg had 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks while Ellie Salmon had 11 points and five rebounds in Bridgewater-Raynham’s 64-35 nonleague victory over Somerset-Berkley… Avery Terry dropped 30 points with eight boards and five steals as Acton-Boxboro rolled over Newton North 69-47.

In the Catholic Central League, Celia Nelson compiled 20 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and five steals as Bishop Fenwick (12-4) topped Archbishop Williams 56-47.

Boys hockey

Gus Gustafson was the overtime hero for Winchester, potting a rebound goal to lift the Red and Black to a 2-1 win over Woburn and secure the Ed Burns Coffee Pot Brinn Division championship. This is the first time in program history that Winchester has claimed a division championship in the Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament.

Ethan Filipski scored two goals and JT Coyne registered a shutout to lead Reading to a 4-0 win over Chelmsford in an Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament consolation game…John Connolly and Thomas Courtney netted goals while Quinn Harrington secured a shutout in Belmont’s 2-0 win over Braintree. … Ryan Ferguson scored twice and three others potted goals for Weymouth in a 5-1 win over Franklin.

Swim and Dive

St. John’s Prep won the boys swimming north sectionals with a staggering score of 240.5. First-place finishes for the Eagles included the 200 free relay team and the 400 free relay team. Westford Academy’s Aiden Gouldson had an excellent day, winning the 200 free and the 100 free. Andover’s Ivan Karpau was also a two-time winner in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Wayland finished second with 214 points while Mystic Valley finished third with 209.

Xaverian claimed victory in the boys’ swimming south sectionals with a cumulative score of 207. First-place finishes for the Hawks included the 200 free relay team and the 400 free relay team. Sharon’s Leo Tran had a successful day, winning the 200 free and the 100 free and Franklin’s Zack Pecora was also a two-time winner, claiming the 200 IM and the 500 free. Catholic Memorial finished second with 184 points, while Natick finished third with 179 points.
