Toyota Recalls 751,000 Highlanders Over Bumper Cover Issue
Toyota has initiated a significant recall affecting approximately 751,000 Highlander SUVs in the United States due to a concerning issue related to the front bumper covers. The problem centers around the tabs responsible for securing these bumper covers in place.
This recall encompasses specific Toyota Highlanders produced within the model years 2020 through 2023, which includes both conventional gasoline-powered models and their gas-electric hybrid counterparts. According to the company’s official statement, the affected SUVs feature front lower bumper covers constructed from resin material, which are fastened to the vehicle using mounting tabs.
The primary concern with these vehicles lies in the potential detachment of these mounting tabs following even a minor impact to the lower bumper cover assembly. If this were to occur, it could result in portions of the assembly detaching and falling onto the road, thereby posing a safety hazard to both the occupants of the vehicle and other road users.
To address this issue, Toyota has outlined a comprehensive solution. Dealers will conduct inspections of the bumper cover tabs on affected vehicles to determine their condition. If no damage is detected, dealers will proceed to install improved hardware designed to provide more secure attachment for the bumper covers. However, if any damage is identified during the inspection, dealers will replace either the upper or lower bumper covers or both, as necessary, in addition to incorporating the enhanced hardware for added safety.
Toyota has affirmed its commitment to promptly notify affected vehicle owners about this recall, with notifications expected to be issued by late December. Additionally, owners can easily verify if their Toyota Highlander falls under this recall by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at nhtsa.gov/recalls. They can input their vehicle identification or license plate numbers to check if their Highlander is included in the recall.
This proactive safety recall demonstrates Toyota’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its customers, underscoring the importance of addressing potential safety concerns promptly and effectively to minimize any risks associated with their vehicles.
