Refresh, revive and renew for a beautiful new year

A shiny and bright new year has just dropped into our laps. Which means there’s plenty to be done.

There are the requisite New Year’s resolutions, of course — to make (and if you’re like many), probably break within a month or so. There will definitely be snow to shovel, vacations to plan and holiday bills to pay. And lots of responsibilities and promises to keep — to ourselves and to others.

But not just yet. New Year’s Day and the days just after are a time for rejuvenating and taking stock, reorganizing and renewing. Whether you hosted multiple holiday dinners for friends and family, organized the office party, collected donations for a food bank, or just got gifts and cards for everyone on your list, you deserve to spend a little time reviving, renewing, reorganizing, rejuvenating, relaxing and replenishing.

Here are a few easy things you can do for yourself at home.

Revive

Right about now, your body is begging for some hydration. Even if you didn’t party hard (and dehydrate with cocktails) over the holiday, New England’s midwinter is harsh on skin and hair. So after weeks of running around, it’s time to block out an hour for a face mask. One of my current favorites doesn’t even require you to be awake: Laneige’s Bouncy and Firm Sleeping Mask ($28.80 on amazon.com) makes sure you get some true beauty in your beauty rest.

Renew

Speaking of beauty, this is the time to set yourself up for looking great the rest of the year. Open up your cosmetics bag, take everything out, and ask yourself: How many of these things have I actually used in the last six months? Throw away any you haven’t. And if your mascara is now more than four months old or seems like it’s getting dried out, replace it with a new one to prevent eye infections. As for the products that you do use most often? Now’s the time to order or go out and buy new ones.

Reorganize

This is the kind of one-hour task that seems boring in the moment, but will save you tons of time in the coming months. Maybe it’s your overflowing sock drawer — in which you can never find a matching pair. Throw away (or mend) any that have holes and fold them in pairs. If it isn’t your sock drawer that needs attention, maybe it’s your coat closet or your sweater rack: Take this time to try things on and see if they actually fit, and if they’re still your style. And if not? Donate them.

Rejuvenate

A pedicure may seem a lot like a facial or a hair mask, but it offers a whole different world of happiness. Investing in an at-home pedi device like the Foot And Leg Spa ($151.99 on sharperimage.com) is a slam dunk, as is a callus remover like Nuvé Silk 3 Pro ($39 on nuvebrand.com). What’s more, once you get to the polish stage, DIY pedicures become an easy thing to multitask; while you’re waiting for the polish to dry, you can move on to the next item.

Relax and Replenish

This may be one of the few times all year when you actually have time to catch a movie or read a book you’ve been meaning to tackle for months. (I have one friend who’s made it her goal this week to watch as many Golden Globe nominees as possible.) Read interviews with your favorite celebs. Bone up on that article you keep meaning to dive into about avoiding microplastics. Rewatch Season 1 of “The Pitt” before Season 2 drops next week. Most of all, give yourself the luxury of enjoying a little guilt-free entertainment.
