Boston Police Blotter: Suspected serial shoplifter arraigned
A man accused of robbing the Back Bay Dick’s Sporting Goods three times in a little over a month was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court Tuesday.
Darrin O’Neil, 60, has been charged with larceny under $1,200 and being a common and notorious thief.
According to Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden, the Dorchester man has a 42-page criminal history that includes convictions for larceny, receiving stolen property, credit card fraud, and breaking and entering.
The most recent incident allegedly involving O’Neil took place on Dec. 27, when Boston Police say they arrested the defendant exiting Dick’s Sporting Goods on Boylston Street in possession of tagged merchandise.
BPD said that they recovered more than $400 of alleged stolen goods. They said they also reviewed store surveillance footage that shows a man who appears to be O’Neil shoplifting on Nov. 30 and Dec. 24.
Judge James Coffey set a $2,500 bail and ordered that O’Neil stay away from Dick’s. The defendant is expected back in court on Jan. 6 to be appointed a lawyer.
“We and our partners are focusing on retail-based crimes for a number of important reasons, including worker and shopper safety and the desire to keep stores open and accessible to consumers,” DA Hayden said in a statement. “Some offenders will receive the services they need to help change their behavior. Others, particularly violent repeat offenders, will be treated as the public safety threats they are.”
The DA’s office in partnership with the city and BPD have started a “Safe Shopping Initiative,” aimed at reducing shoplifting in Boston and especially targeting repeat, bulk, and violent shoplifters.
In 2025, BDP said that shoplifting arrests are up more than 260% compared to the five year average, in part because of increased enforcement and reporting from retailers.
Incident Summary
BPD responded to 150 incidents in the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to the department’s incident log. Those included arrests for one robbery, two aggravated assaults, two commercial burglaries, one residential burglary, two larcenies from a vehicle, 19 miscellaneous larcenies, and one auto theft.
